Winners and Losers of the Rosters

I'm no expert, just a fan who has watched a lot of hockey, so when I give my opinion, I'm not stating it as fact.

Goalies

First off, I'm not sure many would argue with me on this one, but Team USA won the goaltending trio. With Hellebuyck having another dominant year and the favorite by a mile to win his third Vezina trophy, that alone gives them the advantage. The 2nd and 3rd are nothing to look over either, Oettinger and Swayman are both top goalies in the league as well. Team Canada definitely has the weakest goalie lineup. I, among others, question the decision to leave Logan Thompson off the roster when he's been the best-performing Canadian goalie this season.

Forwards

In my eyes, this category doesn't have such a clear winner. I think the U.S. and Sweden are leading the way here with Canada and Finland not far off. This is probably the closest balance of the rosters for this tournament. Team Canada might have the most dominant power play unit ever imagined with Crosby, MacKinnon, McDavid, Reinhart, and Makar, I'm really not sure how they will be able to be stopped.

Defense

I really don't think I could give you an advantage to the defense for this tournament. I might give Sweden a slight advantage. Having players like Hedman, Forsling, and Andersson give the team a lot of confidence to make plays knowing that the defense will shut down the opposition. Canada might have the second spot for me, although I don't like the decision to add Doughty in place of Pietrangelo as opposed to guys like Tanev or Weegar. Doughty has been injured all season and has had his moments to play and help Team Canada win. I just feel like Chris Tanev would have helped give Canada more confidence with the lacking goaltending for the team.

Best Jerseys

Here's my ranking for the design of the Four Nation jerseys

  1. Canada
  2. Sweden
  3. Finland
  4. USA

USA has had really poorly designed jerseys over the past few years. Canada has been very hit-and-miss, but I do think they did well with this one. Sweden and Finland have deviated from the designs that we all expect.

Rules

On the recent 32 Thoughts podcast, it was confirmed that players currently under discipline in the NHL will not be affected for the 4 Nations tournament and likewise players to be disciplined in the tournament will not have their NHL eligibility affected. To me, I think this was a bad idea by the league. Late in the tournament, I could definitely see players take advantage of this rule to benefit their NHL team in making a run for the cup this season. It is especially likely for a team that has already been eliminated from the title game in the tournament. If the league would have even been careful to say, "Players won't see disciplinary actions from the tournament in the NHL following the tournament on a case-by-case basis". This just protects NHL teams currently in playoff contention from having star players injured late in the season, ruining a potential cup run. I can only imagine owners and GMs sweating when they think about this possibility.
